Who we are
DeTranslator is run by Aaron Pina, a sole trader in Ireland (business name Detranslator, CRO 792846). He decides how the personal data described here is used, which makes him its controller under the GDPR.

What we store about customers
Your account email and password hash; the recordings you upload and the processed results; job metadata (duration, price, processing metrics); payment references; and, if you signed up from a link in one of our emails or accepted a free-trial invitation we sent, the address that email went to. Card numbers never touch our servers; payments are handled by Stripe. You need to give an email address to create an account, because without it we cannot provide the service or send you your results; everything else you give us is optional.
If you order the processing of a whole video from a sample page, we store the payer's email address, the name on the invoice if one was given, and the payment and invoice references; Stripe keeps the payment and invoice records. We use customer data to provide the service you ordered and to keep the accounts the law requires (GDPR Article 6(1)(b) and (c)).
How your recordings are processed
Transcription is performed by our processing partner AssemblyAI: your audio is transmitted to them for that purpose and is subject to their data-processing terms. AssemblyAI deletes the audio within two days and the transcripts within four days. GPU processing runs on Modal; files are stored with Cloudflare R2; emails are sent via Resend.
Retention
Uploaded files and processed results are automatically deleted 30 days after the job completes. Job metadata (without media) and payment records are kept for six years, as Irish tax law requires. You can request deletion of your account and all other associated data at any time.
Our hosting keeps the website's request logs (IP address, browser type and the page asked for) for 30 days, for security and to find faults.
Organizations we contact
We look for organizations, such as churches, temples and cultural or community groups, whose public recordings alternate between two languages, because our service can remove the interpreted language from such recordings. For each organization we store its name and country, public information about its YouTube channel and videos, the contact address it publishes on its website, its YouTube channel or its podcast feed, and notes about which languages we heard.
To hear which languages a recording uses, we analyze two short excerpts, about two and a half minutes each, of one public video. The audio is deleted as soon as the check is done; we keep only which languages were heard. The excerpts are transcribed on our own processing servers at Modal or, for some languages, by AssemblyAI, which deletes the audio within two days and its transcripts within four days.
AI services from Anthropic help us decide whether an organization fits, which country it is in and which of its published addresses to write to. These decisions only decide whether and where we send an email; they have no legal or similar effect on anyone.
For an organization in a country whose law lets us write only to registered companies and associations, we also look up the registration number shown on its website or its YouTube channel in that country's public company register. We keep the number, what the register says about it, the page where we found it and short quotes from the organization's website that show the registered entry is the organization itself. AI services from Anthropic help us decide this. We delete this information 13 months after the check if we never wrote to the organization, and in any case 24 months after the check.
For an organization in Canada, we start contact only at an address it publishes on its own website. Just before our first email, we read that page again. As the record that the organization published the address, which Canada's anti-spam law asks us to keep, we store a copy of the page, its web address, the time of the check, the email address and a short quote around it. The page can name people the organization lists on it. We delete this record 13 months after the check if we never wrote to the organization, and in any case 24 months after the check, backup copies included.
We send each organization a small number of emails (or, where it publishes only a contact form, a message through that form), and every first message and follow-up says how to stop them and links to this page. We store the messages we send and the replies we receive. Replies are sorted with the help of an AI service, and some are answered automatically, either with a fixed message or with an answer written by an AI service; the founder reads every reply written by a person. When you arrive on our website through a link in one of our emails, we record the address we wrote to, the time, the page and your browser type, to learn whether our emails are useful; nothing about it is stored in your browser. Our emails contain no tracking pixels.
Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in offering our service to organizations for which it is relevant (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). We weighed that interest against yours, and you can ask us for that assessment.
Your right to object
You can object at any time to our use of your data to contact you. Reply to any of our emails, use the unsubscribe link in it, or write to privacy@detranslator.com, and we stop at once. You can also object to the other uses we base on our legitimate interest; we then stop them unless we have compelling legitimate grounds or need the data for a legal claim.
We keep these records, including the page views and link arrivals described here, while they are relevant, and no longer than 24 months after our last contact with the organization. If you ask us to stop, we keep your address on our list of addresses not to contact for as long as we contact organizations, so that we never write to you again.
Samples made from public videos
For some organizations we make a 4-minute sample from one of their public videos, with the interpreted language removed, and send its private link to the organization. The people who speak in that part of the recording appear in the sample. We do not publish samples: only people with the link can see them, and they are not listed or indexed.
A sample is deleted 14 days after we first email its link to the organization (or 14 days after it is made, if we never send it), or at once when someone presses "Delete now" on its page. If the organization orders the whole video, the sample is kept until the result can no longer be downloaded. After deletion we keep a short record of which video it was, when it was made and to whom we sent it, so that we do not make it again. The page counts a view when its own script runs or a video starts, with the time and the browser type; opening the link alone is not counted.
If someone makes a quote on the page, the page and its sample are kept until the quote expires, 30 days after the quote was made, unless someone presses "Delete now", which deletes them at once.
If you speak or appear in a recording we used, we do not know your name and cannot tell you individually, so this notice is how we inform you. Write to privacy@detranslator.com and we will delete the sample.
Who processes data for us
Besides the partners named above: Google (our website runs on Google Cloud in Belgium, our email on Google Workspace, and our research uses YouTube API Services), Cloudflare (besides file storage, it forwards mail sent to our privacy and support addresses), Modal (besides GPU processing, it runs our prospecting and mailing systems and keeps their records), Neon (our website's database, in London), Stripe (payments and invoices), Anthropic (the AI checks and AI-written answers described above), IPRoyal (network connections for fetching public videos and web pages), Apify (reading the business email address a YouTube channel publishes), TypeSafe (an AI checking service we are testing), GitHub (our private code and records) and Telegram (reports to the founder, which carry counts only).
Some of these companies process data outside the European Economic Area, mainly in the United States. Those transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses; for the United Kingdom, on the European Commission's adequacy decision.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict its use, or to receive it in a portable form, and you can object to its use, including to our emails at any time. Write to privacy@detranslator.com; we reply within one month. You can also complain to the Data Protection Commission in Ireland (dataprotection.ie) or to the data protection authority where you live.
Sign-in providers
If you sign in with Google or Microsoft we receive only your email address and its verification status; no other profile data is stored.
Cookies
We set two first-party cookies. The session cookie keeps you signed in and, if you opened a free-trial invitation we sent, remembers it so that you get the free upload it offers. The language cookie remembers the language you chose, or the language of an invitation you opened, for one year. Both are strictly necessary for the site to work as you asked, never used for advertising or shared with anyone, which is why you see no consent banner. During payment, our payment processor Stripe sets its own cookies for fraud prevention. There are no advertising, analytics, or cross-site tracking cookies.
YouTube API Services
Our internal prospect-research tooling uses YouTube API Services to search public channel and video information. This website does not embed YouTube content and collects no data from your YouTube account. That information is used only to decide whether to contact an organization and to prepare that contact, as described above; apart from channel and video identifiers, the names of the channels we wrote to and the video titles quoted in the messages we sent, it is deleted or refreshed within 30 days. Google's handling of data is described in the Google Privacy Policy: google.com/policies/privacy
